Last season, the Mountaineers signed coach Darian DeVries to a five-year deal. With him came his son Tucker, who was an elite shooter. Just after 8 games, Tucker has season-ending upper body surgery and applies to medically redshirt, which then gives him another year of eligibility. Just after one season with the Mountaineers, the DeVries duo abandon ship for, what Coach DeVries says to be, “the brand, the opportunity, the resources… It was just something I couldn’t pass up” (referring to Indiana Basketball). While they were here, it seemed to give West Virginia fans a new hope by beating teams like #3 Gonzaga, #24 Arizona, #7 Kansas, and #2 Iowa State, which I stormed the court for, and it was the same night the Commanders beat the Lions to advance to the NFC Championship.
This situation is the absolute definition of collusion. How is this allowed? After eight games, and probably even earlier than that, Darian decides to sling up his son’s shoulder and let him know one day driving home from the coliseum to pack his bags. Mind you, through eight games last year we beat 2 ranked teams. Also just completely giving up on Javon Small and what he could have done in the tournament.
After all of this, West Virginia still needed to have a coal miner’s mentality by continuing to dig and search for a new coach and fielding a whole new basketball team. With this came Ross Hodge from North Texas. Hodge in this past offseason brought assistant coaches and players such as forward Brenan Lorient, who averaged 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game at North Texas. Another standout addition to the team is guard Honor Huff, who some are saying is the best 3-point shooter in the Big 12. WVU hoops is off to a hot start this season by being 5-0 going into tonight’s Charleston Classic game against Clemson.
A couple notable stats:
- Ross Hodge, our head coach who we got from North Texas this past offseason, has the opportunity to tie the record for best start for a WVU coach in his first season since Fred Schaus started 5-0 in 1954
- We beat Pitt this past week and it was the largest margin of victory against Pitt in the 55-year history of our stadium. 71-49.
- 49 points scored by Pitt were its lowest in Morgantown since scoring 34 in 1949
On November 16th Miles Sadle announced his commitment to the Mountaineers. Miles is a 4-star recruit who is the number 4 overall point guard in the country. This is the highest-ranked recruit WVU has ever gotten in the modern era (meaning since players have been appointed stars and have had rankings throughout classes). Things are looking up for WVU basketball, and it could be even better with a win against Clemson tonight.
